Emergency Medical Technician
The National University Division of Extended Learning offers EMT certificate programs at four
of its campuses: Fresno, San Jose, Kearny Mesa, and Chula Vista. The Emergency Medical
Technician (EMT) program is an accredited program, recognized by the National Registry of
Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) and accepted across the nation. The Program meets
the requirements of the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Emergency Medical
Services Education Standards (NEMSES), and California State Regulations Title 22. Our
exceptional training includes a comprehensive combination of both classroom and field time,
provided the knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to cultivate an outstanding EMT,
ready for work. Certified EMTs commonly serve at ambulance companies, fire departments,
hospitals, police departments, large stadiums, special events, and more.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in emergency medical services is
projected to grow by 23% between 2012 and 2022. This unprecedented growth rate is much
faster than the average growth rate for all occupations. Emergencies, such as car crashes, natural
disasters, or acts of violence, will continue to create demand for EMTs. Growth in the middle-
aged and elderly population will lead to an increase in the number of age-related health
emergencies, such as heart attacks or strokes. This, in turn, will create greater demand for
services provided by EMTs.
